CALCS is a voluntary and confidential service. As regulated health professionals, Counsellors are required to uphold the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) legislation and maintain the privacy of student information shared during counselling appointments, clinical records and supporting documentation about students. Students are required to complete a privacy/confidentiality form prior to engaging in service with CALCS. We can collaborate and share relevant information relating to student cases with College staff and external stakeholders only when student consent has been obtained to do so with the exception being emergency situations as outlined in the next FAQ.
Upon students signing the privacy/confidentiality form, they are advised of the limits of confidentiality. The limits of confidentiality require Counsellors to make mandatory reports in certain circumstances such as a student presenting an imminent risk of harm to self or others, a student experiencing a medical emergency, where there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a child under the age of 16 if being abused or neglected, where there are reasonable grounds to suspect sexual abuse by a regulated health professional and/or in order to comply with a court order (subpoena, summons or warrant).
- You can share CALCS service information with students and students can reach out to CALCS to book an appointment
- You can support a student who voluntarily seeks CALCS services to make initial contact
- You can consult with CALCS about a student case leading to a possible referral with the student’s prior knowledge and consent
Our philosophy to providing counselling services at CALCS is using a student-centred approach to conduct thorough assessments and co-create a plan of support with students as appropriate. We have a variety of therapy approaches but operate primarily on brief and solution-focused counselling.
We encourage you to…
- Work with students as partners in their academic journey and success
- Work with students to strategize solutions creatively (thinking outside of the box can be helpful when possible)
- View student experiences from a compassionate and wholistic perspective
- Recognize and appreciate individual nuances in student experiences to aid in assessing options and supports
- Consult with other College services and resources such as: Academic Chairs, Coordinators, Success Advisors, Counsellors, etc.
- Be intentional and proactive in sharing CALCS service information with students at the beginning of the semester
- Give yourself permission to pause/reflect/consult and assess the student issue or request before responding
- Remind students of their academic responsibilities in their educational journey and the importance of personal accountability
