Are you concerned that a student needs counselling or mental health support?
CALCS offers timely appointments with Counsellors, as we prioritize new intakes and urgent needs; however, we are not an emergency service. As our services are voluntary, it is important that we respect student autonomy and encourage students to reach out to us directly. However, you can be a valuable asset in assisting in this process, as you already have a connection to the student. Please let the student know we have Counsellors whom they can meet with to support them in their personal challenges, including academic stress, and to discuss academic accommodations if there are any disability-related needs.
Please direct students to the book an appointment page for information on how to contact us. If you are concerned that a student needs some extra support in getting connected to us, we would need their consent for CALCS to contact them directly. With consent and contact information, we are happy to reach out to assist in triage and connection to appropriate and timely services.
We understand that students may email you with alarming concerns. If you have a student's phone number and can speak with them directly over the phone, this can be one of the best methods of communicating support available to them. If you are unable to reach them and you are concerned for a student’s safety, you can engage Emergency Services, which includes contacting Life Safety and Security at Campus Security ext. 52020 or 416-439-4357 or contacting 911 and requesting a “Wellness Check” for someone you believe is in danger.
For more crisis-related support, visit our Crisis Help Page. In addition to our Counselling services, we also offer a variety of Health and Wellness programs.
Remember:
- Talk to them.
- Encourage them to speak with a counsellor on campus.
- Encourage them to meet with their family doctor to discuss their problems. A family doctor may make referrals to specialists like psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists and others.
- Remember, though, that if the student is already meeting with a counsellor, the counsellor can’t provide you with information about the student without their consent.
