Ransomware is a type of computer virus that is generally delivered when malicious content is accessed by a user. Once executed, ransomware encrypts all user documents, both on the computer and/or network drives. A ransom is then asked in exchange for decrypting the files.
Malicious content can include, but is not limited to:
- Unsecure or disreputable websites
- Phishing Emails & attachments
- Infected USB drives
Ransomware typically happens in the following way:
- A user is infected by ransomware when accessing malicious content
- All data on the user's computer and/or network is encrypted
- Ransom demand is made to decrypt user's data
To Avoid Despair, Look Out for Ransomware!
- Always ensure you backup your data to a location outside of your device that you trust. Possible options include: reputable cloud storage, removable USB hard drive, or even a physical printout.
- Always carefully examine URLs (web addresses) for inconsistencies and beware of downloads and launching executable files (e.g., .exe, .com, etc.).
- Be suspicious of any emails you don’t recognize or aren’t expecting and always be cautious of clicking links and downloading attachments.
- Keep your devices up-to-date by installing system and software updates. If available, enable auto-update on your device.
- Use and regularly update anti-virus software on you computers, laptops tablets, and phones.
If you suspect you’ve been infected, disconnect your computer from the internet and any other networks immediately. Stay calm! For College-owned devices, contact the IT Service Desk. For personal devices, seek assistance from a qualified IT professional.
