The Corrections Literacy Initiative (CLI) has been in operation since 2017 serving learners within the Toronto East Detention Centre. Centennial College is one of 14 CLI service providers in Ontario funded through a partnership between the Ministry of Labour, Immigration Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services (MCSCS).
This Employment Ontario program is funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.
This unique program supports justice-involved populations in strengthening essential skills required for post-secondary participation. Centennial’s iteration of the CLI is rooted in culturally-responsive pedagogy and enhanced student support. The program offers courses tailored to the needs of learners at all levels and aspires to reduce recidivism by:
- Providing upgrading in English communications, mathematics, biology and mental health/self-management
- Preparing learners for college entry, or to attain a High School Diploma equivalency
- Encouraging learners towards continued post-secondary participation
- Coaching program graduates for meaningful labour market participation
- Facilitating a learner’s connection with community-based life stabilizing resources and supports prior to release
- Providing resources, information and strategies for managing daily life
