Figuring out if a school is the right fit for you is one of the main reasons to attend a College Open House. You get to physically see the campus and the spaces you'll be studying in, talk to college representatives, and get answers to all your questions. The good news is that Centennial College's fall Open House is just around the corner on November 16, across all our college campuses. To help you prepare, we've put together a list of key questions and things to consider, so you can gather the information you need to make an informed decision.
What can I do for fun on or around campus?
At the very least, you need a place to go for lunch. But a good campus should be a home-away-from-home, since you'll be spending a good chunk of time there. You'll want to check out available clubs, athletics, and activities. And while you're attending our Open House in Toronto, explore the surrounding neighbourhood, as it can add to your overall experience.
What other services does the college have on campus?
Beyond basic services, like the library or the Athletics and Wellness Centre, ask about other resources you might not expect, such as counselling, legal advice, or even the on-campus clothing store (all of which Centennial College offers). Knowing what's available can help you make an informed decision and come in handy once you become a student.
Should I live on or off campus?
If you're considering a college with residence, be sure to take a tour of Centennial Place (our student residence). Ask about things like room types, meal plans, and social events. Meanwhile, if you're planning on living off campus, our Centennial Housing Service offers a number of tools to help you find safe, affordable housing during your studies.
Who would my teachers be?
If you know which college program you're interested in, or at least the general area of study, an open house is a great opportunity to meet your instructors. At a good college, your instructors will be industry experts, so introduce yourself and ask any questions you have about your program. Speaking of which…
Are there any field placements, co-ops, or other on-the-job learning opportunities?
The best way to learn is by doing, which is why Centennial College focuses on hands-on experience. And the best kind of hands-on experience takes you out of the classroom and into the field. Be sure ask what's available in your area of study.
What's the standard class size like?
Bigger class sizes don't mean a better program. In fact, smaller class sizes often mean more personalized instruction and better chances to build relationships with classmates and instructors—both important for your career growth. Ask about the average class size to see what works best for you.
If I need help while I'm in school, where can I go?
If you're having academic difficulties, you'll want to check out the college's academic services or talk to one of our academic advisors. For more personal issues, peer support, or accommodation or disability-related needs, Centennial's Centre for Accessible Learning and Counselling Services has dedicated supports in these areas.
Where can I go to study?
The obvious answer is "the library," but take a tour to see what it offers in terms of study rooms and quiet spaces. But don't stop there–ask about other spaces around campus, too.
Do I like the campus?
That's the big one, really. Does it feel like home? Could you spend a year, or a few years here? That's the big thing that you can't research online–you need to visit in person to see if it feels right for you. And that's why attending Centennial College's Fall Open House is so important.
