From One Student to Another: Why You Need to Visit Centennial College’s Spring Open House

Two student visitors checking in at Centennial College's March Break campus tour event

Coming to a College’s Open House is an essential step in figuring out if that school’s the right place to be for the next step of your education. Centennial College’s next Spring Open House will be taking place Saturday, April 26 across all of our campuses, and you can learn more and register here. When you’re at a College Open House, you’re trying to figure out if the school you’re visiting is the right place for the next step in your education.

It’s important to go to an Open House, but you don’t have to ask us why. Instead, ask a student! Vanshika Bhardwaj is an Advanced Biotechnology student at the college, and will be volunteering at Spring Open House. Here’s what she has to say about why she got involved, and why you want to go.

Making sure you learn what’s here.

Vanshika is volunteering for Spring Open House, because the event is something she wished she’d known about when she started school here.

"The reason I wanted to get involved," she explains, "was because when I came first came here, I had no idea about the kinds of services Centennial offered. But after two or three months, I realized there were so many things that our college had. So, I just wanted to give that knowledge back to the students, potential students, or international students, so that they can get to know those services."

"As a Campus Tour Ambassador," she explains, "my major role will be to show people around the campus, welcoming the guests and meeting the tours. Also, I will be connecting them with professors, where they can ask them questions regarding their programs, and they can even apply on the spot with the help of a recruiter. I'll also be there to answer any questions regarding the programs or services that we offer, or what the environment here is like."

Why you want to go, in her words.

"At open house, there's a lot to look forward to," Vanshika says. "We will have professors here on campus. We can connect students with the staff, and they can actually get a feel for whatever programs they are interested in. They can talk with those particular professors, and they will also be able to apply on-site with the help of our recruitment team. And there are info sessions specifically for international students as well. We also have fun activities, like virtual reality stations, and the rock-climbing wall."

Again, an important thing to her about Spring Open House is the opportunity to learn about Centennial College services that you might not think about.

"For example, the library," she explains. "People know the library is about books, but there are so many other cool features about the library. They have learning strategies, they have peer tutors, they have drop-in centers for Math and English. Apart from the academic stuff, we have Maker Spaces here. All these services, and the library, are free. These are the kinds of things that I will be telling students about."

"Students have the opportunity to connect with the professors directly, and ask them the questions regarding the programs," she continues. "It’s a great way to know about the campus before starting the program."

But to her, the most important reason to go isn’t about the facts, but how the campus feels.

"The best reason is to know about the vibe of the college," she says. "If the vibe matches with you, if you feel good about it, then you will perform well here, right? So, Spring Open House is a good opportunity for students to come here and see what the environment of the college is like."

And as for how to accomplish this? All you have to do is talk.

"The best thing is to talk with everybody," she says. "Talk with the professor, talk with the current students, that’s the best thing you can do"
