Centennial College established the Anti-Black Racism Task Force (ABRTF) in 2020 to develop a set of actionable recommendations to transform and decolonize the missional work of the institution. In Fall 2022, the ABRTF Report and Institutional Commitments formally launched representing an additional step in our journey to embody Indigenization, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as a strategic priority.
These commitments support our campuses to foster “an environment of inclusion in teaching, learning, employment, and support services so we can fully serve our communities and prepare students to excel in the workplace and in society.” The pledges within the critical document are designed to promote change and ensure accountability in all operational areas including programs and services, workplace environment, governance and community relations.
Over the past year, the College community has worked to advance the Institutional Commitments, achieving many significant milestones along the way such as establishing the GNED 234: Decoding Blackness in Canada course for students, offering the Fundamentals of Indigenous Education and Anti-Racism program for employees and much more. But there is more work to be done!
On October 17, members of the ABRTF and the College community will gather at the Event Centre (Progress Campus) to celebrate successes over the past year and look towards future opportunities. Agenda items also include discussing the future organizational structure and mandate of the ABRTF and exploring new coordinating roles in preparation for Black History Month 2024. Lunch will be served following the formal agenda.
