Young women from high schools across the GTA got to explore the skilled trades and technologies June 3 at a Jill of all Trades event hosted at Centennial College.
More than 100 students from Grades 9 to 12 gathered at Centennial’s Downsview Campus, home of its aerospace manufacturing and aviation technician programs. The all-day event featured hands-on workshops and remarks from college leaders as well as skilled trades professionals.
Students participated in workshops in areas including Automotive, Aviation and Electrical, getting to discover whether pursuing a career in the skilled trades might be for them. Workshop activities included soldering wire and electronic components, learning riveting techniques and wiring switches to control lights from multiple locations.
"While the skilled trades offer rewarding and viable career pathways for women, the trades are not always considered as a first-choice option," said Dave Weatherhead, Associate Dean, School of Motive Power and Trades. "The Jill of All Trades event highlights the critical importance of the skilled trades, the growing demand for highly skilled workers, and the exciting opportunities available for women pursuing careers in these fields."
Skilled trades workers are in high demand in Ontario, with the provincial government estimating that Ontario will need an additional 400,000 workers in the skilled trades over the next decade.
"Jill of All Trades is more than just an event; it is an opportunity to empower young women to see themselves in careers where there have historically been barriers for women," said Indira Singh, Student Recruitment and Skilled Trades Activities Coordinator and Lead Event Coordinator for Jill of All Trades. "At Centennial College, we are proud to create hands-on experiences that build confidence, spark curiosity, and connect students with mentors and industry leaders who are helping shape the future of the skilled trades. Watching participants discover their potential and leave inspired is what makes this program so meaningful."
