| Description | This course applies advanced counselling skills to equip Social Service Worker students with practical skills to support individuals, families, and groups using a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and strengths-based approach. Through experiential learning, including role-plays, simulated interviews, case studies, and group facilitation, students will develop competence in establishing ethical helping relationships, conducting client-centred assessments, and implementing intervention strategies. Key topics include systems theory, crisis intervention, culturally diverse family structures, cultural responsiveness, professional accountability, ethical decision-making, confidentiality, and legal considerations. Students will explore therapeutic models such as Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Emphasizing professional identity development, self-reflection, and collaborative planning, this course prepares students to integrate counselling skills into real-world practice and uphold social justice mandates within their work.
