From creating skateboarding videos of him and his friends at 11 years old to now creating engaging content on topics that range from video editing to travel, Justin Serran, a graduate of our Broadcasting – Film, Television, Digital Media and Radio program, has followed this journey of content creation that has led him to an amassed 100k+ followers on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.
As Justin reflects on what he enjoys most about making content on his channel, he says that getting to make content that he wants and not having to do so because others tell him to is one of his favourite elements, in addition to travelling for content, which he shares is an added bonus.
Accompanying his content creation role, Justin started his own company, Visual BLVD, back in 2017. As a full-service creative agency that creates digital content for brands and individuals, Justin explains that his purpose behind starting this company was to brand his work as a freelancer and to classify his work as more of a business. This took him from freelancer to full-fledged business owner. As a small operation, Justin takes on multiple responsibilities, from acquiring new clients to completing hands-on work and communicating with other editors and creatives to ensure what needs to be completed on a given day.
The Broadcasting program continues to play an important role in Justin’s career. The editing course, in particular, proved beneficial in Justin developing his skills in this field, as he explains that it helped him establish the foundation of the editing skills he uses in his post-production agency and as a full-time editor. Another element that added to his experience in the program was the internship component, that he says provided real-world experience. “In my case, [my internship] even led to a solid job right out of the program,” he adds. With the program’s focus on preparing students for their careers while ensuring the material is up-to-date and taught by industry professionals, Justin was equipped with several tools needed to succeed, which led to a seamless process from internship to job.
What led Justin to the Broadcasting program? Similar to what ignited his content creation: skateboarding. “I decided to take the Broadcasting program after being introduced to making videos at a young age through skateboarding. It has always made the most sense to me to try and do something you actually love, or at least enjoy, for a career because you’re gonna spend the majority of your life doing it,” he shares. While affordability was something that stood out about this program Centennial, the campus environment won him over when he began his first day.
