Five truths about a career as a Food Service Worker

Chances are "Food Service Worker" doesn't mean what you think it does. For one thing, you're not a burger-flipper. This is a program taught at the School of Community and Health studies. If you want to help people through nutrition, it's an excellent career, and this is an excellent program that can quickly and effectively connect you to that career. Your role is to apply the principles of nutrition to food production in the health care food service environment at locations like Extendicare, Sienna Senior Living, O'Neil Centre, Bridgepoint Health Centre, Rouge Valley Health System, Lakeridge Health Network, Sodexo, Aramark and Compass Group, to ensure the health and wellbeing of staff and patients.

2. It's a program with rigorous government standards

Because you're becoming a health professional, the courses in this food service program were developed against standards from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care regulations, meaning your education meets current government standards and industry requirements, so you know you're getting a quality experience.

3. You'll learn about the science of nutrition

In the Food Service Worker program, you learn real information about the nutrition we need to survive, including how diet affects illness and diseases, and use that knowledge to assemble therapeutic meals. You'll learn how to provide a safe and healthy dietary environment, and use food to contribute to the health and wellbeing of those you serve.

4. Your education is augmented with practical experience

In this college food service program, you'll be learning the tools of the trade in practical laboratories on campus, but that training will also be rounded out with a field placement in a healthcare facility, where you can gain hands-on learning and apply what you've learned to a real-world situation.
