Career Counselling Appointments
Career Counselling is a collaborative counselling process designed to help you clarify your program, career and future educational vision and goals. The goal of career counselling is to help you make sense of where you are now and to give you the tools to make more informed career decisions in the future.
The career counselling process involves some or all of the following:
- Building self-awareness of what you’re good at, what you enjoy, and what you care about along with other factors that are important to you
- Identifying program and career options as well as researching more about them (salary, job prospects, growth opportunities, typical day, etc.)
- Making effective decisions and setting goals
Examples include:
- “I want/need to change programs but what should I take?”
- “I know I want to continue my studies at college/university after I graduate but I’m not sure what to take or how to do it”
- “How do I choose between three program options I like?”
- “I know what my long-term career goal is… what do I need to do to achieve it?”
- “What career direction should I take now that I’ve completed my studies?”
All students (full time and part time), students taking a break from studies, students who have been suspended from their program, and those who have graduated (alumni) can book an appointment with the Career Counsellor.
Career Counselling appointments are usually 45 minutes in length.
It is common that students meet with the Career Counsellor for a few appointments (3-4 on average), but it depends on your needs as it can vary between one appointment to five or more.
The first Career Counselling appointment is an intake appointment where the Career Counsellor will learn more about you and what brings you to career counselling, with the aim of identifying goals for the appointments. The Career Counsellor will typically ask you lots of questions about you and your experiences and you will be welcome to ask any questions you have. It is also common that resources will be shared during this appointment.
Once you have met with the career counsellor and goals for career counselling have been established, you will continue working through questions, reflections, and exercises to move you towards reaching your goals. Examples of exercises that might be used:
- Telling stories from your past to identify strengths, values, and interests
- Using an online tool to get ideas of career paths that might be a good fit
- Doing occupational research to find salary expectations and job prospects for areas of interest
- Using a decision-making matrix to help with program or career decisions
No. The career counsellor will not make the decision for you or tell you what career is right for you. The decision is yours to make. Think of the career counsellor as a guide to the process of making the decision.
Yes – but there is a lot more to career counselling than career tests! Career tests cannot tell you what career path to pursue. You are much more complicated than a career test gives you credit for. In career counselling appointments, online career tests are sometimes used as a tool for learning more about yourself or to give you ideas for occupations you hadn’t thought of before.
No, but for support with these topics and anything else job search related, please book with an Employment Advisor or join a drop-in.
