Tenant Rights

If you are looking for off-campus housing, be aware of your rights and responsibilities as a tenant and what you can expect from your landlord: Information for New Tenants.

Know Your Rights

Your landlord must have a legal reason to evict you and to do so it must be listed in the Residential Tenancies Act. The Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) creates a rental housing system that protects tenants, helps landlords and promotes investment in Ontario’s rental housing market. If you have a concern with your tenant/landlord or you would like information about residential landlord and tenant issues, please contact the Landlord and Tenant Board. The Landlord and Tenant Board helps mediate any conflict between landlord and tenant. For more information, go to Landlord and Tenant Board.

If You Are Renting and Live Off-Campus, You Have Tenant Rights

You cannot be asked to move out of your rental unit based on any form of discrimination, including health or illness concerns from your landlord. For more information visit the Renting in Ontario: Your Rights page for more information. Familiarize yourself with the Current City of Toronto Average Market Rents & Utility Allowances as well.
