Instructions and How to Prepare:
You must submit a music portfolio that demonstrates your musical background and experience. In order to receive first consideration for admission to the Music Industry Arts and Performance (MIAP) program, your music portfolio must be submitted by February 1st. Portfolios received after February 1st will be assessed on a first come - first served basis as long as there is space available in the program.
Music Portfolio
Your music portfolio MUST include the following:
- TWO audition videos of yourself performing two contrasting pieces on your primary instrument (one song per video).
- Complete and submit this music background questionnaire in pdf format.
- Two or more of the following items:
- Results of a music theory evaluation that you will complete online (see instructions below).
- A reference letter in PDF format speaking to your musical ability and preparedness for college.
- Studio-quality audio recording in MP3 format featuring you playing and/or singing a song that is different from the song in the submitted videos.
- Sheet music or lead sheet in PDF format of an original song. If the song contains lyrics, the lyrics should be printed underneath the melody line.
- Link to a video recording of you performing live in front of an audience. You must be clearly seen and heard in the video.
How to submit your music portfolio
Send all of your music portfolio materials via email to music@centennialcollege.ca. Please include your primary instrument in the subject line of the email – you must choose ONE primary instrument (such as “voice” or “guitar”). DO NOT submit videos as email attachments – please submit videos as links to YouTube that are typed into the body of the email. The YouTube videos can be public or unlisted videos. All other materials can be submitted via email attachment in the formats noted above (PDF and MP3). If you complete the theory test, please include the test codes in the body of the email.
Please only use music@centennialcollege.ca for music portfolio submissions. Any other questions about the MIAP program or the music portfolio should be sent to:
- Brian de Lima at BDeLima@centennialcollege.ca
Important Additional Instructions: Audition Videos
You can audition as a singer, rapper, or instrumentalist. As an instrumentalist, you can audition on any instrument, including turntables. The video must feature you performing “live,” that is, you must be clearly seen and heard actually singing and/or playing an instrument for the entire video (not lip-syncing, as in a music video). The pieces can be cover songs or original songs of any length. You should choose songs that you’re comfortable playing/singing and that best showcase your musical ability. Given the focus of the MIAP program, songs aligned with popular music (such as blues, rock, country, soul, hip-hop, r&b, etc.), world music (non-Western music), and/or Indigenous music are preferred. Pre-recorded accompaniment tracks can be used, but your playing/singing must be clearly heard above any pre-recorded accompaniment.
You must choose ONE primary instrument (such as “voice” or “guitar”), and both of your audition videos should feature you on your primary instrument. If your primary instrument is voice, you can accompany yourself on guitar, piano, or other instrument if you like, but only your voice will be evaluated. Important Additional Instructions: Music Theory Evaluation.
If you wish to demonstrate your background in music theory by completing an online music theory evaluation, please follow these instructions:
- There are 5 short music theory tests that evaluate different levels of music theory knowledge. You should do one or more of these tests – the more you do, the stronger your application will be. Links to the tests are below:
- Note Identification
- Key Signature Identification
- Interval Identification
- Scale Identification
- Chord Identification
- Click “Start Challenge” to complete the test.
- After the test is completed, click “View Report.”
- Type your full name in the box next to “Sign Report,” then click “Sign Report.”
- Click “Copy Code” and then paste the code into the body of the email that you send for your portfolio submission.
