The Community Outreach team is rooted in the commitments made by Centennial College to Indigenous Nations and communities through the Indigenous Strategic Framework (ISF). Community Outreach connects with learners, students, Indigenous serving organizations, families, Nations and communities to build relational engagements that pay tribute to the vibrant and rich heritages of diverse Indigenous peoples. Outreach practice is reflective of each pillar of the ISF:
Pillar 1: Indigenous Nations and Communities
- Forming relationships with citizens of Indigenous nations, and members of Indigenous communities to promote access to education, persistence in education, transition to sustainable employment, and attainment of a career.
Pillar 2: Equitable Access Opportunities
- Facilitating access to education for Indigenous learners, supporting persistence in education for Indigenous students, through motivation, advocacy, and guidance; as they shape the confidence required to overcome historical, social, and economic barriers.
Pillar 3: Indigenous Learning and Development for All
- Connecting learners and students to Indigenous culture, through the resources/services of the College, Nations, and communities.
Pillar 4: Indigenous Spaces
- Recognizing and affirming Indigenous sovereignty, traditions, and culture through the display of Indigenous art and artifacts within Outreach spaces, and providing access to the Friendship Space and the Virtual Friendship Space, to all learners and students.
Pillar 5: Student Services and Experiences
- Providing an Outreach Coordinator dedicated to supporting Indigenous learners and students with accessing resources, navigating systems within the College and community, such as career counseling, application processes, financial information related to OSAP, band funding and bursaries, and the academic opportunity of the Indigenous Knowledges – First Peoples in Canada Certificate.
A relationship with the Community Outreach team offers opportunities for Indigenous learners and students to be supported and connected to their learning environment, academically, culturally, and socially.
Through collaboration and partnerships with Indigenous serving community organizations, and College services, we journey with Indigenous learners who are taking non-traditional pathways to access and persist with post-secondary education, employment, and career goals.
