Field Placement FAQs
Field Placement FAQs
What is Field Placement?
Field Placement (PB-790) is a course of study during which qualified students work full time as interns for a minimum of six weeks at a book or magazine publishing company or industry organization. Students must complete this course to earn their graduate certificate. Field Placement takes place during the final six weeks of the Publishing - Book, Magazine and Electronic program.
In addition to the Field Placement supervisor, a faculty member assigned to PB-790 will monitor a student's progress in the course. As with all courses, students earn a letter grade at the end. The grade is based on feedback from their placement supervisor.
What are the benefits of taking Field Placement?
- Students gain valuable hands-on experience with a publisher or related organization.
- Students learn what it's actually like to work in a business environment that demands consistently meeting deadlines, being punctual, contributing ideas and producing work that meets an employer's demands.
- Students acquire new pieces for their professional portfolios — making them much more marketable.
- Students begin building their networks of helpful industry contacts.
- Occasionally, a Field Placement results in contract work or a full-time job.
What credits or courses do I need in order to be eligible for Field Placement?
Students must successfully pass all program courses prior to PB-790 to be eligible for Field Placement.
How do I register for Field Placement?
Field Placement is included as a course in second semester. When web-registration opens for second semester, students must visit myCentennial and build their timetable then verify that Field Placement is listed as one of their courses. If they do not register for Field Placement, they will not be allowed to report to their agency.
Why do I pay for Field Placement?
Field Placement hours are part of the program and contribute to the mandatory hours required to complete the program, as approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Payment for the entire program is distributed over the number of semesters students attend.
Mandatory non-tuition fees are also included in the fees for Field Placement semester. These fees are reviewed and approved each new academic year by several committees and Centennial's Student Association.
During Field Placement students are still considered students of Centennial College with all associated privileges and responsibilities. They will have access to the campus computer labs, college libraries and their Workers' Compensation is covered by the college.
Will I be paid while on Field Placement?
Field Placement is part of the final semester term, during which students apply their skills, without pay, in a professional environment.
Will the program find me a Field Placement?
The coordinator of the Publishing - Book, Magazine and Electronic program, with assistance from other faculty, reaches out to many industry contacts to generate a list of potential Field Placement internships. Students then work with the coordinator to try to match them with placements from this list. However, the initial list of placements may not suit all of students. So, we encourage students to investigate other potential internships, especially in magazines. While doing so, they must work closely with program faculty to avoid duplication. Students receive ample amounts of guidance, direction and advice during the Field Placement selection process.
If not, how will I get a Field Placement?
Field Placement (PB-790) is a requirement of the Publishing - Book, Magazine and Electronic program. Students must complete this course to receive their graduate certificate. They work closely with the coordinator to secure their internships. All students will ultimately be matched with an organization.
