Utility and Building System Failures

Hydro Failure

Campus buildings are equipped with emergency lighting to assist occupants to safely evacuate the building. Life Safety and Security Services has a limited supply of flashlights, batteries and emergency light sticks available to assist with the safe evacuation of the campus. 

In the event of a power failure

  • Building occupants should not stay in dark areas of the campus i.e. rooms without emergency lighting. They should stay or gather in common areas such as an authorized classrooms or the Cafeteria where there is emergency lighting and wait for further instructions.
  • Security and Facilities and Services will investigate the cause of the power failure and in as timely a manner as possible, identify how long it will take to restore power.
  • Refer to the Suspension of Normal Procedures for further information on closures
  • Water outage, Plumbing Failure or Flooding

In the event of a water outage

  • Building occupants should report the outage to Campus Security
  • Security and Facilities and Services will investigate cause and in a timely manner as possible identify how long it will take to restore water
  • Refer to the Suspension of Normal Operations Procedures for further information on closures

In the event of a plumbing failure or flood

  • Cease using all electrical equipment
  • Notify Security at Ext. 52020
  • If necessary, vacate the area
  • Facilities and Services will investigate cause and in a timely manner as possible identify how long it will take to address flooding
  • Refer to the Suspension of Normal Operations Procedures for further information on closures

Gas Leak

  • Evacuate the area and Notify Security at Ext. 52020
  • Do not switch lights on or off or use any electrical equipment, remember an electrical spark can trigger an explosion!
  • Security will contact Facilities and Services and/or the Gas Company to assess and determine hazard level
  • Refer to the Suspension of Normal Operations Procedures for further information on closures

Ventilation Problem

  • If smoke or other odours come from the ventilation system, immediately notify Security at Ext. 52020 and Consult area manager or chair and if necessary cease all operations and vacate the area
  • Security and Facilities will investigate to determine cause, advise on necessity of continued evacuation or other further safety precautions
  • Any other ventilation or air quality concerns should be referred to the Facilities and Services Work Order Ext. 7535

Elevator Failure

In the event of a power failure, most College elevators (Progress main Campus, Ashtonbee and Morningside Elevators) will go to the ground floor and the doors will open to allow occupants to safely escape.

Report Elevator malfunctions to Campus Security at Ext. 5240 or Facilities and Services Work Order Ext. 7535 (Hours Weekdays 8 AM to 5 PM).

If you became trapped in an elevator

  • Remain calm
  • Use the elevator emergency phone to call for help
  • If the elevator is not equipped with a phone use the emergency call button to summon help and advise the person to contact security
  • If someone has a cell phone call the College Security Emergency Help Line for assistance

If you are stranded on a floor from the elevator failure, contact Campus Security and they will attempt to arrange lift assist services with the Toronto Fire Services or EMS.
